Essential firefighting equipment including tools used to help at the scene of road traffic accidents has been stolen from a fire station in North Yorkshire.

Thousands of pounds' worth of tools were taken during the burglary at Helmsley Fire Station between 01:30 GMT and 02:30 on Sunday, according to North Yorkshire Police.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said the fire engine was still able to respond to emergencies but added: "The equipment will be replaced but at a significant cost."

Anyone who witnessed anything suspicious at the time of the burglary or who has dashcam or doorbell footage of the incident has been asked to contact police.
