An 81-year-old woman has died after being hit by a car outside a Marks and Spencer shop.

She was struck by a white Renault Captur car as she walked across the road at Silverlink Retail Park in North Tyneside at about 17:10 GMT on Monday, Northumbria Police said.

She was taken to hospital with serious injuries, where she later died.

The driver of the car remained at the scene to help police and the force has asked for witnesses to contact them.
