A man has pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of an 80-year-old.

Arno Engels slapped Anthony Scarrott, from Worthing, across the face, which caused him to fall backwards and hit his head, according to Sussex Police.

The 40-year-old, of no fixed address, was initially arrested by officers on suspicion of assault and bailed, before being rearrested and charged with murder.

However, he admitted to manslaughter at Hove Crown Court in January.

'Tragic and distressing'

Scarrott, who knew Engels, was found with serious injuries at an address in Westcourt Road in Worthing on 11 September 2025.

He was taken to hospital but later died three days later.

"This has been a tragic and distressing case, particularly for Tony's family and friends," said Det Insp Amanda Zinyama.

"Our thoughts remain with them," she continued.

Engels has been remanded in custody and will be sentenced on 25 March at Hove Crown Court.
