A multi-million pound project to support the wider regeneration of Stranraer waterfront looks poised to secure planning consent.

The application - tabled by Dumfries and Galloway Council (DGC) - would involve a major expansion of the town's marina.

No objections have been raised and the blueprint has been earmarked for approval.

A decision on funding for the project - previously estimated to cost £18m - is expected to be made next month.

The marina project is part of wider plans designed to revitalise the town's waterfront after the loss of its ferry terminal and realise its potential as a marine leisure destination.

The work will involve the creation of 185 new berths - including 14 for commercial use.

A wide range of other facilities will be developed or upgraded including the creation of a new Coastguard and Marine Research Centre.

Studies suggest that the project could help pull in thousands of additional visitors a year and deliver a multi-million pound boost for the local economy.

The Stranraer marina expansion will also include:

  • increased dredging and breakwaters
  • new links to berth pontoons
  • workshops to support marina operations
  • renovation of existing harbour and marina facilities

An earlier study conducted by the council suggested that the scheme could help draw in an additional 20,000 visitors every year.

The plans are also projected to deliver a financial dividend to the local economy of more than £35m over the next quarter of a century.

The planning application will go before DGC's planning committee on 25 February with a recommendation to approve.

The project is part of the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal which is financed by both the UK and Scottish governments.

A business case for funding is expected to be considered by its partnership board in March.

Other plans to help regenerate the town include the building of a new watersports centre and an upgrade of the derelict George Hotel.
