Part of Beverley Road was closed during the incident

Beverley Road was closed at about 23:30 GMT on Thursday between the junctions for De Grey Street and Queens Road.

Reporting from the scene for BBC Radio Humberside, Sally Fairfax said there were eight or nine police vehicles between the junctions.

She added the closure was affecting some parents taking their children to Stepney Primary School.

Freya Wigham, a teaching assistant at Kelvin Hall School, was on her commute to work earlier and tried to find a way through.

The 24-year-old said: "It's a little bit scary to see so many police officers so well armed, not saying anything and being so quiet and still.

"I would say hopefully it's nothing, but clearly it's not."
