A residential road is due to remain closed while repairs take place on a burst water main and a sinkhole.

Park Avenue North in Harpenden, Hertfordshire, was closed to traffic after a resident reported a water-filled sinkhole to emergency services on Monday.

A worker told the BBC he estimated the hole was about 16.4ft (5m) wide and 13ft (4m) deep.

Affinity Water (AW) has revealed that as well as damage to the road, a water main had burst.

In a statement, AW said: "The area is safe and has been secured to protect the public.

"The sinkhole is confined to the road and does not affect nearby properties."

Hertfordshire Police confirmed no injuries were reported.

AW said the road will remain closed while its teams repair the water main and fill the hole.
