A man has been arrested at Gatwick Airport by police investigating reports a gunman had boarded a train.

British Transport Police (BTP) said it received a report at 12:45 GMT that a man was on a train from Brighton with a firearm.

Sussex Police said it detained a man on a train 40 minutes later when it pulled into the airport station.

He was arrested for possession of two imitation firearms, the force added.

BTP said investigations were under way.

Southern Railway wrote on X that trains were temporarily unable to call at Gatwick Airport, although normal services have since resumed.

"Disruption caused by the police dealing with an incident at Gatwick Airport has now ended," it said just before 14:30.

"Services are no longer affected by this problem."

Thameslink and Gatwick Express trains were also affected.
