Event to attract more women into engineering
Angel Santana (via Getty)Women who have forged successful careers in manufacturing and industry are encouraging others to attend a careers fail in Scunthorpe.
Former teacher Carrie Grimbleby now works in energy generation and storage at Associated British Ports.
She said: "You don't have to have had a straight-line career to belong in manufacturing or renewables – sometimes the most interesting paths are the ones with a few turns."
The free, Manufacturing and Engineering (WiME) event takes between at The Baths Hall between 15:30 to 18:00 GMT on 11 March.
Grimbleby said: "I loved teaching, but I wanted to make change on a bigger scale. WiME helped me see how my skills could transfer into industry and gave me the confidence to take that leap."
Tracy Westerby, from Select Plant Hire, said: "These WiME events have such a positive impact by bringing female students, industry professionals and employers together to show what's possible."
She said WiME events were important for "opening doors for future talent".
More than 20 employers are expected to attend, including British Steel, Ørsted, GEV Wind Power and Smith & Nephew.
Councillor Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said industry has changed.
He said: "Manufacturing and engineering in our area are no longer the industries many people imagine.
"They are modern, innovative and central to the future. Events like WiME help show local women and girls that these careers are not only achievable, but exciting, well-paid and future-proof – and that they can build those careers right here in North Lincolnshire."
Dr Kirsty Clode, chair of WiME, said the event was for young women and their parents, women thinking about switching careers, and also those returning from work after a break.
She added: "Today many roles call for innovation, problem-solving, adaptability and team working – all of which women are great at."
The event takes place from 15:30 to 18:00 GMT.
