A woman in her 50s has died in a hit-and-run crash.

It happened just before 23:00 GMT on Saturday on Durham Road, near the junction with Arbroath Road, in Farringdon, Sunderland, Northumbria Police said.

The woman had been crossing the road when she was hit by a vehicle, believed to be a dark-coloured 4x4, travelling east.

The force said it was trying to find the driver involved, who left the area.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and her next of kin are being supported.

Sgt Steven Chappell said: "There will be increased patrol activity in the area over the weekend, and anyone with concerns is encouraged to speak with an officer on duty."

A section of Durham Road was closed to allow officers to carry out inquiries, but it has since been reopened.
