A sergeant who pursued relationships while on duty "undermined the trust of the public", the chief constable of Essex Police has said.

Llewellyn Holmes was caught using police vehicles "inappropriately" and spending time away from his proper place of work to suit his own agenda.

He was found to have committed gross misconduct, and would have been sacked by the force had he not already resigned.

Chief Constable Ben-Julian Harrington said he was committed to maintaining the highest standards among his officers.

It was said a "sustained misuse of police time and resources" by Holmes was found during the investigation into his conduct.

He was placed on the policing barred list, banning him from the profession for life.

Harrington said: "This former officer has undermined the trust of the public, misusing police vehicles for his own personal agenda related to personal relationships.

"Whilst people in policing will understandably have personal relationships that form in the work place, they should never be at the cost of the service to the public."
