A supermarket has been left damaged after a cash machine was removed in an overnight ram-raid.

Norfolk Police said it was investigating after a stolen digger was used to target the machine at a Tesco Express in The Square, Thorpe Marriott, near Norwich, at about 02:24 GMT on Tuesday.

The force said thieves left the scene in a separate, unidentified vehicle and have appealed for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to get in touch.

Store manager Ben Ellis told the BBC the store would be closed for a few weeks while repairs were carried out.

Adrian Crotch, Conservative councillor for Drayton North, said he had met with Tesco and the police following the incident and that he was "disappointed" to see this happen in the community.

"Unfortunately due to the structural damage to the shop frontage it is likely the shop and post office will be closed for several weeks," he said.

"The store should be secured by the end of today and Tesco property services are already working on getting the damage repairs and the store open as quickly as possible."

The BBC has contacted Tesco for comment.
