A £6.6m bridge which replaced a historical tram bridge is to officially open on 22 May.

The 140-tonne crossing, linking Avenham Park in Preston city centre with Penwortham in South Ribble, replaces the historical tram bridge which closed in 2019 over fears it would collapse.

Preston City Council said: "Seven years on, the bridge over the River Ribble has been completely rebuilt and transformed into a modern 130m (426ft) landmark, designed for people to enjoy and use for generations to come.

"The bridge will serve as a bridleway, as well as for pedestrians, and cyclists."

The council added: "The opening event will recognise the contribution of partners and will involve a range of community groups across the city.

"Further details about the opening will be shared in the coming weeks."

The 130m (426ft) span steel bridge has camuru wood vertical deck panels with stone work on the approach.
