Fire crews were called to Weston General Hospital on Thursday morning

A fire at a hospital has been extinguished and the unit has reopened to outpatients.

Emergency services were called to Weston General Hospital in Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset, at 05:36 GMT.

University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the hospital, said there were no patients or staff in the area affected by the fire, which has since been safely put out.

The trust said nearby wards were temporarily evacuated and firefighters remained on site to ventilate the building and check for hotspots.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service said the cause of the fire is believed to be accidental and there were no reported injuries.

A spokesperson for the hospital said while a small number of appointments had been affected, patients should attend as planned unless contacted by the hospital directly.

"Our emergency department is open and services are running," they said.

"Thank you to our colleagues and the emergency services for their quick response to this incident," they added.

Crowds of people mill around on a busy street outside Weston hospital. A police car monitors the scene. Smoke can be seen in the background.
Staff were told to wait on Grange Road but have since been allowed into the building

Grange Road, which is next to the hospital, was closed in both directions while the fire was brought under control, with staff trying to access the site held at a police cordon.

The road reopened at about 09:15, with staff also permitted to enter the building.
