A road closure described as "horrific" by people living in a city has reopened after three months.

A part of Goldhay Way, near Paynels, Peterborough, was shut by Anglian Water in December for emergency sewage works, which residents said caused huge inconvenience.

Gemma Anne, who lives in Orton Goldhay, said the road closure meant "every journey became a mission".

Anglian Water said the works had been "a complicated engineering job, which is why it took a while to get everything back to normal".

A diversion was put in place temporarily while the works were ongoing.

Anne added: "It might just be a road to some people, but to us it's been three months of planning every journey.

"The school run took longer and even popping to the shops became a bit of a mission."

Kirsty Knight, an Independent councillor for Orton Waterville on Peterborough City Council, called the road reopening a "relief".

"The impact of the closure was huge, because it was bang in the middle of Longueville and Waterville.

"This time of year, weather is not good. We've had quite a lot of flooding and lot of flooded footpaths. So, you're unable to walk and had to drive and to just take that detour just to go and get the vital bread and milk. It was horrific," she added.

A spokesperson for Anglian Water said: "In order to keep our engineers and other road users safe, we had to keep Goldhay Way closed while we worked, but we've now completed the work and fully reopened the road.

"We appreciate that it's been disruptive for local residents, and we'd like to thank everyone for bearing with us while we got things sorted."

Malborne Way, in Orton Goldhay, is expected to be closed for about four months on 23 March for gas works.

Knight said the road closure was originally planned in December, but was pushed back to avoid two simultaneous road closures in the same area.
