Crush, a loggerhead turtle, will leave Jersey for the mainland on Tuesday

A rare turtle that washed up in Jersey following Storm Goretti is to be flown to the UK for rehabilitation.

Crush, a loggerhead turtle, was given life-saving treatment at New Era Veterinary Hospital in St Saviour, Jersey, after she was found extremely weak and suffering from malnutrition.

The vet practice said the creature would not cope with a ferry journey but Loganair had offered to transport her by plane.

The airline has received special permission to fly Crush passenger side to Southampton where she will continue her rehabilitation.

The veterinary hospital said Crush would be put into quarantine for a few weeks

From Southampton, Crush will be taken to the Sealife centre at Weymouth in Dorset.

Crush was found on a beach during Storm Goretti in January.

Vets believe exposure to cold water in the English Channel resulted in her suffering "cold stunning", which causes a turtle's body to shut down.

The animal hospital said on social media she would be put into quarantine in a tank for a "few weeks".

The post said: "Then she will join another cold stunned turtle in a much larger tank.

"She will be fed up and get strong enough for a return to the wild in Spring - when all five cold stunned turtles in the UK will be taken and released.

"We will all miss her but know she needs to get back to the wild."
