A railway station shut for more than a year has finally opened after a 14-month delay.

Northumberland Park in North Tyneside, which is on the Northumberland Line, opened earlier allowing passengers to get from Shiremoor into Newcastle in about 10 minutes.

The Northumberland Line between Ashington and Newcastle began carrying passengers in December 2024, decades after the old service ended, however Bedlington and Northumberland Park stations remained unfinished.

Bedlington station is the final station to be completed and will open on 29 March.

Buses and Metro trains already use the transport interchange at Northumberland Park, but the Northern service significantly reduces the journey time into the city.

Commercial director at Northern Rail, Alex Hornby, said the station will allow passengers to change between the trains and the Metro to get a direct train to the airport and other destinations.

In January, the Northumberland Line reached the milestone of one million journeys since its opening in 2024.

Ahead of the final station opening, Conservative council leader of Northumberland County Council, Glen Sanderson, has already set his sights on extending the railway line up to Newbiggin-by-the-Sea.

However he previously said the council could not achieve this without external help and that he believed North East Mayor Kim McGuinness "will be extremely generous with her money".

He added he wanted to see an extended line "up and running within the next five years".
