A horse found trapped in deep mud in a narrow gully has been rescued by firefighters.

Crews from four fire stations were sent to free the horse, named Max, after he was found "completely exhausted" lying on his side in the mud and running water in Denchworth, north of Wantage, on Friday evening.

Working with a local vet, firefighters used specialist equipment to safely pull Max out from the steep-sided channel, said Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service.

The animal was soon back on his feet following the ordeal, the service added.
