Plans for Liberation Day 2026 unveiled
BBCPlans for the upcoming Liberation Day celebrations have been unveiled by the Bailiff of Jersey.
It will be 81 years on 9 May since Force 135 landed in St Helier to end the German occupation of the island.
Similar to recent years, celebrations will be hosted in and around Liberation Square, with people re-enacting the landing, and hoisting the Union Flag from the harbour master's office, Pomme d'Or Hotel and Fort Regent.
The traditional states sitting and address will be different however, as it is the lead-up to Jersey's general election - so a constable who isn't standing will speak on behalf of the Assembly.
As well as the proceedings in Liberation Square, a full programme of entertainment will take place in Weighbridge Place over the Liberation Day weekend.
'Sense of community'
The Bailiff of Jersey, Robert MacRae said: "This year's Liberation Day will be my first as bailiff and I am very much looking forward to joining islanders in marking our national day.
"Having attended Liberation Day commemorations for many years, I have always been struck by the powerful sense of community and shared reflection that the occasion brings across Jersey," he said.
"Liberation Day serves as a moment for us all to come together with family, friends and neighbours to celebrate our freedom, honour the experiences of those who lived through the Occupation and wartime Britain and reflect on the resilience and unity that shaped our island's history.
"It is also an opportunity to ensure that the legacy of that generation continues to be remembered and understood by future generations."
