Plans for 90 'extra care' flats set for approval

A council plan to turn the site of a former care home in Derby into 90 flats for older and disabled people has been recommended for approval.

The redevelopment of the council-owned land at Heron Way, between Mickleover and Royal Derby Hospital, would increase the supply of "extra care housing" in the city.

It is a type of housing that allows people to live within their own self-contained home with access to onsite care and support.

Derby City Council's cabinet will make a decision on whether to move forward with the plan at a meeting on Wednesday.

If it is approved, then a main contractor would be procured later this year, according to council documents.

A planning application would then be submitted around October 2026.

Derby City Council said the flats would be managed as affordable housing, and let at social rents to ensure they were accessible "to a wide range of residents".

Councillor Alison Martin, cabinet member for health and adult care, added it was a "major step forward" in how the council supported older and disabled people.

"By bringing forward this scheme, we are ensuring that we continue to invest in homes that will help people to live healthy, independent, and fulfilling lives within supportive communities," she said.

The £26.5m project would be partially paid for by grant funding from the government, subject to a successful application, while the remaining money would be borrowed.

The project would aim to be finished by 2029-2030.
