Driver admits failing to stop after fatal crash

A van driver has pleaded guilty to failing to stop at the scene of a collision which resulted in the death of an 11-year-old girl in Sheffield.

Elemie Wainwright died in hospital after being hit by a white Ford Transit at the junction of High Street and Station Road in Mosborough on 12 June.

On Tuesday, 28-year-old Ashley Gervis, of Marrison Drive, Killamarsh, appeared at Sheffield Magistrates' Court where he pleaded guilty to failing to stop at the scene of a collision and driving a vehicle over the weight limit and was given 10 points on his licence and fined £2,066.

South Yorkshire Police said the investigation into Elemie's death was ongoing.

In a statement released at the time of her death, Elemie's parents said: "Our baby girl, our life and soul, with the biggest smile, the biggest heart, you were the kindest, most sweetest, most beautiful baby girl.

Her mother, Jodie Wainwright, said: "I don't want anyone to ever forget her and the playground will be a permanent legacy for Elemie."
