No trains will run in or out of Manchester Piccadilly until Friday morning due to an electrical fault.

Some connections were initially delayed by up to an hour following the fault with the overhead wires, National Rail said.

Network Rail later confirmed no trains would run in or out of the station until 07:00 BST on Friday, including services from Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, Northern, TransPennine Express and Transport for Wales.

Network Rail spokesperson said it was "responding" to the issue and overnight repairs were being carried out.

Chris Wright, North West route director, said: "We are sorry to passengers for the impact of today's disruption, caused by overhead line damage. The issue is complex but our teams are working hard to repair the railway as soon as possible.

"We have worked closely with our train operator partners to keep passengers on the move wherever possible, so please check the National Rail Enquiries website for the latest information on train services in the coming days."

Tickets were being accepted on some Bee Network services in the meantime.
