Debt stricken health club gets new owners
BBCA health club in Derbyshire which was heavily in debt after a fire and chemical leak has come under new ownership.
In January it was revealed that Mark Clifford PT Ltd, which operates The Clifford Health Club and Spa in Long Eaton, had entered a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA), due to debts of more than £2m.
It came just days after a fire caused by an electrical fault and a chemical leak in 2025.
The company has now gone into liquidation but the club will continue to operate as The Regent Health Club & Spa.
In a Facebook post, Mark Clifford said he was "very saddened" the business could not recover.
He added that the new owners were committed to protecting as many memberships, spa vouchers and staff roles as possible and were planning significant investment.
Phone lines are due to reopen on 19 February, and while the gym is currently open with some restrictions due to ongoing repairs following the fire, there is a target date of 1 March for the spa and studios to reopen.
In January 2025, Erewash Borough Council announced it had started an investigation into the chlorine leak which was confirmed as ongoing in December.
