Major work to upgrade a key road junction is set to start next week.

The A172 Marton Road/A174 Interchange in Middlesbrough is due to undergo a programme of repairs and improvements from Monday.

The work will include bridge repairs and road resurfacing, which is expected to last until the autumn, with drivers warned of significant disruption.

Middlesbrough Council said: "While delays are unavoidable during a project of this scale, these will be kept to a minimum where possible."

Work includes concrete repairs beneath the bridge, replacement of waterproofing, new kerbs and footways, resurfacing, and the installation of new pedestrian fencing and vehicle safety barrier.

A temporary continuous contraflow system on the A172 will be in place during the works. Temporary lights will be used during certain phases, with occasional overnight lane and full road closures.

The contraflow will temporarily reduce the north-south traffic capacity over the bridge, with single lanes in each direction.

Drivers are also being warned that when travelling east or west on the A174 and accessing Marton Road via the slip road, it will be a left turn only on to Stokesley Road, with no right turns permitted.

When crossing the bridge, right turns on to the A174 will also not be permitted.

The Labour-led authority said it has worked closely with contractors to enable traffic to continue to use the bridge while work is ongoing and to avoid the need for lengthy diversions.

Advanced warning notice boards will be placed on affected roads prior to the start of the works and ahead of any expected full closures.
