Work is expected to start on upgrading Dewsbury market and creating a new park in the summer.

Kirklees Council said the revamp was designed to create a "modern space", building on the market's existing heritage while at the same time attracting new visitors and businesses.

The site would also feature an outdoor event space and a "town park" where people could meet, shop and spend time, a council spokesperson said.

A temporary market will open before the main work gets under way to enable traders to continue operating during construction, the spokesperson added.

Dewsbury Arcade, which has been empty since 2016, is also currently being restored and is expected to open later in the year as the country's first community-run shopping centre, a council spokesperson said.

Improvement works at the Civic Space and memorial gardens are also set to be finished by the summer, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Councillor Graham Turner, cabinet member for finance and regeneration, said it was "really positive to see momentum building across so many regeneration projects" in the town.

"By carefully phasing our work, we're making sure the town centre continues to function and thrive as investment is delivered.

"The redevelopment of Dewsbury Market is central to this vision, creating a vibrant space that celebrates our town's heritage while welcoming new visitors and supporting local businesses."
