Southern Water said some of the water mains - made of cast iron - had been in the ground for up to 100 years

Work to replace ageing water mains under a key Isle of Wight road has finished early, with the one‑way system put in place removed.

The work on Horsebridge Hill to replace replaced the old main with a 500m (1,640ft) plastic pipe started on 26 January.

During the work the A3020 Cowes-Newport route became a one‑way system with diversions expected to be in place until 17 April. The route opened fully on Wednesday morning.

Southern Water said the upgrade would reduce the risk of bursts, leaks, water discolouration and interruptions to water supplies.
