A 55-year-old man has appeared in court accused of causing the death of a pensioner by hitting him with a stolen Maserati car in Broughty Ferry.

Fraser Garden is accused of stealing the car before losing control of the vehicle, entering a garden at speed and trapping the 74-year-old against a house, resulting in his death.

Garden, of no fixed abode, is also accused of failing to stop to give his name and address, refusing a blood test and failing to report the collision.

He made no plea and was remanded in custody.

It is alleged the car was stolen from West End Garage in nearby Queen Street.

It is alleged Garden drove the car on Queen Street, Fort Street, Forthill Road and Nursery Road at excessive speed, drove through a red light, overtook vehicles in the face of oncoming traffic, failed to negotiate a bend and lost control of the car.

He is also accused of driving while disqualified and without insurance.

Garden is further accused of giving a false address to police.

He faces a total of nine charges including causing death by dangerous driving.

The incident happened on Forthill Road at about 13:00 on Monday and involved a red Maserati Quattraporte car.

The road was closed for more than seven hours while police investigated the incident.
