An elderly couple were injured after they were struck by a car in a supermarket car park.

Northumbria Police said a red Honda HR-V hit the woman and a man, who were loading their shopping into the back of a white Mazda CX-5 in the Aldi car park off Armstrong Road, Washington, at about 13:50 GMT on Monday.

The woman, in her 80s, suffered serious injuries and remains in hospital, while the man, in his 70s, had minor injuries.

The force said the driver of the Honda was assisting officers with their inquiry and asked for witnesses to come forward.
