It was "quite an experience" having contestants on The Apprentice visit his business for the latest series of the show, an Isle of Wight garlic farmer has revealed.

The BBC One programme filmed at The Garlic Farm, in Newchurch, run by husband and wife Barnes and Natasha Edwards, as part of a buying challenge featured in Thursday's episode.

The contestants were tasked with purchasing nine items associated with the island as cheaply as possible, in scenes filmed in June.

"The whole premise of the show is around discounting," said Barnes. "I couldn't help but say the Isle of Wight generally doesn't do discounting, it can't afford to - everyone needs to make a living here."

The eighth episode of the show's 20th series also saw contestants discussing their task at The Hut in Colwell and visiting other island businesses, including Grace's Bakery in Newport.

Natasha was shown allowing contestants Dan Miller, Priyesh Bathia and Pascha Myhill to pick their own Maddock Wight garlic after they asked to do so for a discount.

Meanwhile, aspiring Apprentices Kieran McCartney and Lawrence Rosenberg were shown visiting the farm later. They thought they had a bargain when they bought their garlic for 15% less than the standard retail price but still paid £7 more than their rivals.

Barnes told Radio Solent it was "funny talking to the production team about all their ideas".

He added: "Here at The Garlic Farm, we definitely and categorically do not do pick your own, so that was strictly for the telly."

Dominic Wray, the chief executive of Visit Isle of Wight, said the episode showcased the island "in the best possible light" and that it had already seen an upturn in traffic on its website.

He said the contestants were an "interesting group of characters", adding: "Their personas definitely do amplify up when their cameras start rolling - they're a little more timid off screen."

He said that during filming, the show's production team worked with several island businesses, including The Royal Hotel in Ventnor, where Lord Alan Sugar's aides Baroness Brady and Tim Campbell stayed.
