Nine-day festival to promote city's heritage

A nine-day festival starts on Saturday, aimed at promoting the history of Worcester.

The Love Worcester Heritage Festival, first held in 2011, will include tours, trails, workshops and family-friendly activities, many of them free.

Ruth Smith, the city's tourist information centre manager, said it was "a great opportunity for people to discover the exciting heritage attractions and incredible events happening on their doorstep".

Here is a list of some of the attractions over the coming days:

The festival runs from 14-22 February and some events require booking in advance:

  • Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum will have dinosaur-themed workshops on 14 February and a trail throughout the following week
  • The Commandery also has a trail, along with craft activities, between 17-19 February
  • Worcester Cathedral will be showing off some of its hidden Royal beasts on 16 and 17 February
  • St John's Library will allow children to handle some of its artefacts, listen to a story and create a map filled with mythical creatures in an event hosted by Worcestershire Archive and Archaeology Service on 17 February
  • Visitors to the George Marshall Medical Museum will be able to take part in tours on 16 February
  • The Infirmary will allow people to handle some of its objects on 18 and 20 February
  • Tudor House will be telling the history of wool and weaving with a 30-minute tour and talk on 18 February, and family drop-in weaving activities on 19 and 20 February
  • Throughout the festival, Sound and Art St Swithun's is seeking the next generation of musical talent, with workshops for 8-16 year olds
  • Worcestershire Masonic Library and Museum is telling the history of freemasonry on dates throughout the festival
  • On 22 February, the Museum of Royal Worcester is celebrating the LunarNew Year with Worcestershire Chinese Association and bookable themed pottery painting
  • Living History in Worcester weekend will take place on 21-22 February with more reenactors at The Commandery, Tudor House and Greyfriars House and Garden
