Durham County Council is putting on free events to mark County Durham Day

Free events, tours and activities are being offered to mark County Durham Day.

The celebration on 20 March marks the death of Saint Cuthbert, the county's patron saint, and Durham County Council is putting on a series of activities to highlight the area's history and heritage.

Libraries will display local history books, books by local authors and stories inspired by the county, as well as hosting Lego challenges for children to build yellow and blue displays - the colours of the county flag.

The Story, which hosts displays on the area, will offer free tours and prominent buildings, including Durham Town Hall, will be lit up in the flag's colours.

Council leader Andrew Husband said County Durham Day was a "fantastic opportunity to celebrate our beautiful county".

"We want to showcase our local pride, heritage, creativity and community spirit by bringing residents together for a vibrant programme of activities," he said.

A pilgrimage is also taking place from St Mary and St Cuthbert's Church Parish Centre in Chester-le-Street to Durham Cathedral, followed by a service.

More information on the events is available on the council's website.
