New parking spaces for mopeds and scooters have been introduced in Epsom's High Street in a bid to stop delivery vehicles parking on the pavement.

Epsom and Ewell Borough Council said delivery riders mounting kerbs outside fast-food restaurants have caused concern in recent years.

"Vehicles blocking pavements cause significant safety risks for pedestrians, especially wheelchair users, those with visual impairments and parents with prams," a spokesperson said.

The council says the new spaces, found outside the town hall, mean there is "no longer any excuse for this unacceptable and inconsiderate parking".

The council recently passed a motion for all new retail and takeaway outlets to have dedicated motorcycle parking and is calling for meetings with companies running food delivery apps.

Steven McCormick said: "Pavements are for people, they are not for motorised shortcuts.

"We've heard from residents who have been forced into the road because the footway is entirely blocked.

"We are committed to making the High Street safe for everyone. The new moped bays that Epsom & Ewell have provided will mean there is no longer any excuse for this unacceptable and inconsiderate parking."
