Two motorways in the north-west of England have been closed after crashes, causing delays for commuters.

The M61 has been closed between Junction 9 for the M65 and Junction 30 of the M6 near Preston, Lancashire, on the northbound carriageway, after a crash at 02:00 GMT, National Highways said.

The M53 remains shut after a police car and a motorbike, which was suspected to have been stolen, crashed near Junction 2 in Moreton, Wirral on Sunday.

Merseyside Police said the rider suffered "serious injuries" during the collision at about 15:30 GMT.

The motorbike had been spotted by police on Love Lane in Wallasey. The rider was taken to hospital.

A mandatory referral will be made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, the force said.
