Those in breach of the injunction could be fined or even jailed

Street racers, including spectators, could be arrested in Wolverhampton, Sandwell and Walsall following a High Court ruling.

The court granted an injunction banning the activity, which is also known as car cruising.

It forbids anyone who is a driver, rider or passenger to participate in motor racing or other dangerous driving between the hours of 15:00 and 07:00 in a gathering of two or more.

The injunction also covers organisers and spectators and means promoting or organising such events will be banned, and also gathering as a spectator with the expectation that some people will engage in street racing.

Police officers in Wolverhampton, Sandwell and Walsall have been granted the power to arrest anyone who breaches the injunction.

Breach of an injunction is a contempt to court and, if proved, the court has the power to impose a sentence of imprisonment, a fine, or an order seizing a person's assets.

The injunction and power of arrest will remain in force until at least 1 March 2027.
