Passengers faced significant delays across the Tyne and Wear Metro network due to problems with overhead lines.

Services were cancelled between Gateshead Stadium and South Shields, as well as from Gateshead Stadium to South Hylton, during Thursday morning but have since resumed.

Operator Nexus said work on the overhead lines had been completed but previously warned it would take "some time" for the first trains to leave South Shields and South Hylton.

Metro tickets were accepted across Stagecoach and Go North East buses, as well as Northern trains between Sunderland and Newcastle's Central Station, until 13:30 GMT.
