South Yorkshire Police pursue speeding driver attempting to flee

A teenager has been arrested after being found hidden in bushes following a high-speed chase through Barnsley.

The 18-year-old was tracked down by a police dog after officers patrolling in Cudworth on Wednesday had earlier noticed the driver of a van reacting to their presence.

Police said a pursuit then started, with the van being driven up to 70mph (113km/h) in a 30mph (48km/h) zone before two of its tyres were punctured by a stinger and the driver fled and hid in bushes.

He was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop, dangerous driving, driving without insurance, driver while disqualified, theft of a motor vehicle and driving while under the influence of drugs, a force spokesperson said.

Police said that during the chase, the driver had taken the vehicle the wrong way around a roundabout in an attempt to flee officers.

The teenager had since been bailed pending further inquiries, the spokesperson said.
