Merseyside Police believe the messages the school received on email were a hoax

A school has been closed after staff warned parents and guardians of a "serious emergency situation" following reports of a malicious communication, which police believe was a hoax.

West Derby School, an all-boys academy in Tuebrook, Liverpool, told parents of the decision to shut at about 19:30 GMT on Tuesday.

It said it was responding to a "serious emergency" and parents would be updated on Wednesday.

Merseyside Police said several schools across the region had received similar emails - all believed to be hoaxes - and officers were working to identify those responsible.

A notice on the school's website said: "West Derby School is closed on Wednesday 21 January 2026.

"Please check your Arbor App and emails for further information and updates."

'No requirement to close'

Holly Lodge Girls' College nearby went into lockdown on Monday after a threat was sent via email.

Ch Insp Dave Currie said: "We understand the concern and rumours that can arise from such incidents, and as a result we are liaising with all schools and providing advice and reassurance as enquiries continue.

"The relevant schools are also communicating with parents and carers.

"Based on the information we have received and assessed, there has been no requirement for those schools to close."

The BBC has contacted West Derby School for comment.
