Two boys, aged 12 and 16, have been arrested following an early morning car crash.

Two cars collided at the junction of Winterbottom Avenue and Warren Road in Hartlepool just before 05:25 BST, Cleveland Police said.

The boys, who were occupants of a red Ford Ka which had been reported stolen, were injured and taken to hospital, with the older boy losing consciousness and several teeth, police said.

The teens were arrested on suspicion of several driving offences. The driver of the second vehicle, a 49-year-old man, was also taken to hospital with a head injury.

Cleveland Police said the Ka collided with a Mercedes Vito taxi.

Both vehicles then struck a pedestrian barrier and officers believe someone ran from the Ka before police arrived at the scene.

The younger boy sustained cuts and bruises, police said. They will be questioned later.

Police are asking witnesses or anyone with doorbell, dashcam or CCTV footage of the collision to get in touch.
