County gets fleet of electric buses in £2.2m boost
Getty ImagesA new 17-strong fleet of greener and quieter electric buses are set to replace older diesel vehicles following a £2.2m investment from the government.
The buses will be in service across West Northamptonshire, adding to the county's existing Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas (ZEBRA) projects and collaboration with Stagecoach.
The investment is part of a £10.4m package that will also benefit journeys for people across Liverpool and Nottinghamshire.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said: "Buses are the backbone of our public transport system, and passengers in West Northamptonshire deserve a network they can rely on and be proud of."
The government said the electric buses would reduce harmful emissions and improve air quality for thousands of passengers.
It is part of a wider project to introduce 484 zero emission buses across England.
Sam Read/BBCMike Reader, Labour MP for Northampton South, said: "People who live, work and study in the area rely on the bus network, so to boost it with brand new vehicles that make the ride cleaner and greener is really welcome.
"This Labour government is showing it will continue to deliver on its promise to invest in our transport, putting passengers at the heart of it, while still bearing down on climate change."
