Hoax call prompts armed police operation at park

A hoax call led to an armed police response to a park in Derby.

Police said firearms officers alongside East Midlands Ambulance Service and the Air Ambulance Service were deployed to Normanton Park in Warwick Avenue at about 19:10 BST on Thursday.

But on arrival officers established it had been a prank call.

A spokesperson for the force said hoax calls are "a waste of police and other emergency services' time" and said: "When resources are tied up with things like this it is preventing us from responding to real emergencies, where people's lives may be at risk."

Anyone with information about the call has been asked to contact the force.
