Why are discs appearing on Guernsey's roads?

Traffic monitors have been installed on major roads around Guernsey to gather data on the vehicles that pass over them.

Traffic and Highway said the information, such as how many vehicles are using the roads and the speed that they are travelling, would be used to provide a better understanding of main routes and help plan potential future developments in the area.

Monitors have been installed at six new sites - Vale Road, Les Banques, Vazon, La Grande Rue, La Route du Brayes and Rue des Bordeaux.

Laura Oxburgh, head of on-island travel and transport implementation, said some monitors had been in place on "several major roads" for a "number of years".

"These locations were chosen with the potential development of the surrounding areas in mind, and so there is a need to have data available to help make evidence-based decisions when looking at local road infrastructure," she added.

The department said more monitors could be installed in the future.
