Huge weekend of snowfall over New York City

I'm dreaming of a white... Twixtmas?

It's not a White Christmas, but a White Twixtmas for New York City this weekend.

New Yorkers have been waking up to a blanket of snow over their home city, as the famous US location faces one of its biggest snowstorms in nearly four years.

The storm started overnight on Boxing Day, with people in boroughs like Brooklyn getting their first taste of snowfall

11cm of snow has fallen in Central Park, the iconic landscaped park that sits in the city.

Back in 2022, Central Park had over 20cm of snow, but even with half that amount of snowfall, the conditions have forced lots of changes to travel and transport over the holiday season.

By early Saturday morning, after most of the snowstorm had fallen, a state of emergency to be declared in New York City.

Other places got their very own White Twixtmas too, with New Jersey and Connecticut facing snowy conditions too.

Whilst many Americans have been having fun in the snow, it's also led to some problems with getting to and from where they live.

The flight tracking website FlightAware shows that over 900 flights were cancelled on Saturday, with most of them in the New York area.

Meteorologist Bob Oravec, whose job it is to predict the weather, has said that "the good news is that the heaviest snow is done".

Even though it's unlikely that more snow will fall, current New York City Mayor Eric Adams wrote on social media that the city will be "ready for however much we get."
