4. The Boar

Episode 4 of 5

The Romans decorated shields with boar imagery and tusks were used as talismans in battle. With Joanna Pinnock. From 1999.

Until its eventual demise in Britain, the wild boar played an important role in the lives of our ancestors.

It was admired by The Celts as a brave and worthy opponent.

The Romans decorated their shields and helmets with boar designs and boar tusks were used as talismans in battle.

Medieval bestiaries portrayed the boar as a stubborn creature that would always hold its ground and was, therefore, a committed and loyal Christian beast.

Another in the series examining the importance of five groups of animals and birds to the ancient cultures of Britain.
