Kate Molleson follows Sibelius in the creation of his Sixth and Seventh Symphonies - and also the Eighth which the composer destroyed. These works were not only composed during a period of unrest for Finland, during and after World War One, but also a period of increasing uncertainty for Sibelius himself in terms of his health, and also his financial security. It was amid this backdrop of disharmony on many levels, that Sibelius continued to explore new compositional territory in his symphonic writing.
