International Women’s Day

Helen Mark MBE presents BBC Radio Ulster’s weekly Ulster-Scots magazine this week alongside Rab Lennox, Jonnie Crawford and Willie Hill. It’s International Women’s Day, so the team shine a spotlight on some incredible female figures with a strong Ulster-Scots background. Helen meets actor Maggie Hannon, who has written and performed a one woman play about Nurse Catherine Black. From Donegal, Nurse Black served in World War 1 before becoming a private nurse for King George V. We hear excerpts from the play and more about this remarkable story. Rab catches up with Deirdre Speer Whyte, who works with the Ulster Scots Community Network, setting her a very tricky challenge – picking just five Ulster-Scots women who have excelled in their field! Meanwhile – Willie finds out how some schools are embracing a change in how Ulster-Scots is taught to and discussed with the children.
