Shostakovich's Ninth Symphony

The Leonkoro Quartet performs Haydn’s “Bird” Quartet, and The Ulster Orchestra plays music by Sibelius and Shostakovich plus Stanford's Rachmaninov inspired 2nd Piano Concerto.

Linton Stephens with another programme of specially recorded performances from the UK and abroad. Pianist Mihály Berecz performs Hungarian music by Bartok and Liszt, and we hear Haydn’s ‘Bird’ Quartet from former Radio 3 New Generation Artists the Leonkoro Quartet. This week’s featured ensemble The Ulster Orchestra opens the programme with Sibelius’s deeply romantic Suite King Christian II; they’re joined by Irish pianist Finghin Collins for a performance of Stanford’s 2nd Piano Concerto, composed as a direct response to hearing Rachmaninov’s 2nd Concerto, and the Ulster Orchestra end today with Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 9 – a piece full of orchestral brilliance.
