Food prices: The hidden cost of war

The Middle East war is pushing up fertiliser and fuel costs - now food prices are rising too.

The war in the Middle East is sending shockwaves through the global food system.

Disruption to fertiliser supplies, combined with rising energy and shipping costs, is pushing up the price of growing food around the world.

Farmers are facing tough choices over how much to plant and how much to spend, while global markets aren’t always keeping pace with those rising costs.

For now, there is enough food and shelves remain stocked. But if the disruption continues, experts warn the real impact could come later this year and into the next, with higher food prices and growing pressure on the most vulnerable countries.
