Beach, Bars 'n' Beats

Sa Trincha on Salinas
Jonathan grey is the resident DJ at Sa Trincha beach bar, situated at the far end of Salinas beach. With a reputation as one of the best beaches on the island, Salinas attracts one of the most cosmopolitan and diverse collection of sun worshippers you are ever going to have the fortune of stumbling across. Playing an ultra-chilled selection of beach bar beats to naked beauties is Jonathan's daily routine…it's a bitch but someone has to do it.

When did you start working on the island?
I started about six years ago. I first came out here about twelve years ago with my mum and I knew then that I would return, especially to this beach. There was some thing about the spirit of the place.

Did you have a regular nine to five job back in England?
Yes I was a photographer and I had all my stuff nicked. I had always collected records so I went on to become a DJ. If I hadn't had my camera stolen I wouldn't be here now, I'd be stuck in a studio somewhere doing shots of baby shampoo or something dull like that.

How do you program your days?
Well I have the freedom to do what I want and play what I want, which suits me. I'm totally spontaneous; I don't have sets I just play how I feel.

And how long do you play for?
Eight or nine hours a day. I used to do seven days a week but now I just do six. I have a day of to have a look at the rest of the island.

You have a gorgeous beach in front of you, lovely weather, and beautiful people all around you. Are you ever tempted half way through the day to just unplug your headphones and go and join them?
No, I love doing this. The only problem is leaving it and going back to what is known as normal reality.

Is Sa Trincha a bar to go to if you want to spot superstars?
I wouldn't know. The problem with living here is that you don't recognise people any more. I'm just so out of touch with magazines. I could be sat next to someone famous once and really wouldn't know. I think I met Kate Moss once and asked her what her name was.

What gives Sa Trincha its magic?
The great thing about this place is that you could be standing next to the King of Spain one minute and an old hippie the next. It just doesn't matter who you are. When you come to Sa Trincha you are on the same level with everyone in the bar.

What is your favourite part of the summer?
Everyday is great and every day is different though it is a bit of a relief at the end of the season. I finish my season on October 15th, my birthday, and there is always a huge sigh of relief.

If someone offered you a million pounds to leave the island and never set foot on it again would you accept?
No, not at all. Why are you offering?
