Manumission - The Party.

Manumission have hosted their famous party nights at Privilege for a number of years and they just seem to be getting more popular each year, never failing to fill the huge 8000 capacity venue.

Privilege, or Ku as it was know until a few years ago, is the venue to end all clubbing venues. For a start it's enormous. Think aircraft hanger and you're on the right track. The ceiling must be at least 50 foot high, with a very expensive hydraulic system providing a sort of sun roof effect in the middle. One end of the venue is sheet glass. This allows the morning rays of light to pierce through the venue and alert clubbers that it's nearly time to go home, or go to Space. Whatever the case may be.

Inside no expense has been spared on decorations either. There's a swimming pool in the middle of the club, fountains, gardens, trees, plants and a whole array of fake tropical paraphernalia. Manumission themselves also don't cut any corners on jazzing up the venue with a different theme for each party and decorations straight from Fredericks of Hollywood.

Musically the venue tends to toe the Ibician big-night-out line, with big name DJ's spinning the discs in the main room and a bit more of a funky flavour in the back room. Definitely no complaints here, but the bloke on the decks isn't the reason why people come to Manumission. Performance is the name of the game, and unlike most other clubs, a night at Manumission can be more of a spectator's sport. From the second you walk through the door you are bombarded with an array of performers, dancers, fire-eaters and weird and wonderful people to entertain you. Participation is very much encouraged, but if you want to sit back and watch the show then you'll have no problems doing so.

Chilling out at Privilege is most definitely the best on the island. The venue has an observation deck from which you can see right across the island, and gardens, around the venue's perimeter. This offers comfortable tables and a drinks service while you sit and chill. This year also saw the edition of an eaterie, a branch of the 'oh-so-hip' Spanish restaurant, Gula Gula. Like it's bigger sisters in Madrid and Barcelona, the restaurant offers a chilled-out eating space for the beautiful people, with great food, great sounds, and 'tranny' staff that are as likely to squirt you with their water pistols as serve your salad.

The thing about a night at Manumission is that it isn't different from all the other clubs on the island, it's the point where they all converge. Everyone is here, from the party people to the posey people through to the up-for-it lads and lasses, and they're all getting along just fine. Manumussion is supposed to mean 'release from slavery', and depending on your definition of slavery, that's exactly what it is... Go there.
