foster children

Listen to the item

Last month Birdie McDonald won the 'Outstanding Achievement Award' from Women of the Year, in recognition of the more than 700 foster children that she has taken care in her lifetime.

Birdie was unusual in that she did short term fostering. When there was an emergency in the middle of the night - and there was nowhere for a frightened child to go - it was Birdie who would step in, open up her arms, her heart and her home, and take care of them.
