In 1934 Bernadette was diagnosed with Gender Dysphoria a condition which in those days was barely heard of never mind understood.
Her parents were advised by medical professionals to "make a man of him" or he would become homosexual.It was another 54 years before she could start to obtain treatment. She explains to David Stafford how the condition affected her.
